medcom.id, Jakarta: Luar Batang village in Penjaringan, North Jakarta has a long history. The settlement has been established long before Indonesia's independence.
In the fifth century, Sunda Kelapa Harbor emerged as important port. The crowded port triggered settlements around the area
"Luar Batang village has existed since the 12th century but the settlement at the time had different name," said Mansur, a local resident when met by Metrotvnews.com.
Mansur explained in the 17th century, the village became temporary settlement for sailors, as the colonial government banned ships from entering Sunda Kelapa harbor at night.
"Ships had to pass through checking posts, every cargo was examined. Permission to dock took days," he said.
An Nur Mosque, also known as Luar Batang Mosque, made the village famous. The mosque was built in 1739 by Habib Husein Bin Abu Bakar Al-laydrus or Habib Luar Batang, prominent ulema in Jakarta at the time. "He came from Hadhramaut, Yemen," Mansur added.
Habib Husein was also famous throughout the archipelago. "He once visited Aceh, Surabaya and Cirebon," Mansur mentioned.
From Luar Batang, Habib Husein preached Islamic teachings. He and his disciples also preached outside Jakarta.
Habib Husein passed away in 1756 at Luar Batang. He was buried inside Luar Batang Mosque. He is still revered by people until today.
"All presidents from Soeharto to Jokowi had visited the tomb, as well as officials. Even pilgrims from the Middle East, United States, Singapore and Malaysia," said Mansur.
The Jakarta Provincial Government is going to revitalize Luar Batang Village . The location is included in the revitalization plan of Maritime Tourism Area.
