Minister Susi Affirmed No Fishing in Indonesia for Foreign Parties

Husen Miftahudin • 08 September 2015 11:47
medcom.id, Jakarta: Minister of Maritime and Fishery Susi Pudjiastuti is to fully close the movement of foreign parties to fish in Indonesian territory. It is meant to achieve Indonesia's goal to become the maritime axis.

"I have decided and will pursue this to happen, that the fishermen fishing (here) are only Indonesians," Susi said when met at her office, Jalan Medan Merdeka Timur, Central Jakarta, Monday (9/7/2015).

However, the affirmation is still yet to be poured into regulations, as currently there are still existing regulation providing access to foreign parties to fish in Indonesian sea territory.

"Our Government Regulation (PP) allows Foreign Investors (PMA) to fish using foreign parties and fishermen. This regulation is against the Indonesian Law, as it stated no foreign fishermen. We have to revoke it, I have spoken to the president to revoke PP on foreign fishermen and fishing companies," she stated.

Susi mentioned that the foreign parties should be given as much access as possible in the investment for sea products downstream. Therefore, it will affect the creation of work fields and technology transfer to Indonesia.

Unfortunately, Minister Susi's wish was held back by a regulation saying that the foreign investment posted in Indonesia on the sea products downstream can only be as many as 40 percent.

"I want to ask the government to reverse it, buyer factories may (owned by) foreign parties 100 percent, be my guest. But (for) fishing (at sea), can't be foreign parties 100 percent. We fish. We hold the upstream, downstream can be anyone," Susi concluded.
