medcom.id, Jakarta: The Head of Public Information Bureau of the National Police Headquarters Grand Comm. Agus Rianto explained the chronology of the clash in Karubaga, Tolikara, Papua, on July 17. According to Agus, the incident was started by several youths wanting to stop the Eid prayer activity at one of the mosques.

"There is a variety of information we have received, but based on the Police Chief visit (General Badrodin Haiti) to Tolikara, the situation at the time was during the Eid prayer in front of the Military Command Headquarters, where several youths came to stop the activity, the information was acquired from the Police Resort Chief," said Agus on Metro TV's Prime Time News, Monday (7/20/2015).

Personnel on duty at the time tried to block the youth. However, rather than lowering the tension, the clash escalated to a level that one of the personnel fired a shot.

"Indeed the Police Resort Chief and personnel were trying to block, as the activity had been communicated previously to GIDI and the regional Regent, as when the dispersing was continued by the group of people, Police Resort Chief put his best effort but was unable to stop them as it gets more crowded. Finally all the friends with firearms fired shots," Agus conveyed.

Following the shots, the group of people moved back but retaliated by throwing at the kiosks around the mosque. By doing that, according to Agus, the group of people did not mean to burn the mosque which was used for Eid prayers at the time.

"There were some who conducted throwing at the kiosks which were finally burned, while the buildings there were also easily burnt. It finally caught in flame whereas dozens of kiosks were burnt including the mosque. The information is that it was hard to put out the flame as there was no firefighter trucks and far from water," Agus explained. (EPS)
