11 March 2019 19:03
Labuan: First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo planted mangrove trees in Labuan beach, Banten Province, to minimize the impacts of high waves in the coast.

"There are a total of 53 thousand mangrove trees being planted simultaneously today," Iriana stated here on Monday.

The 53 thousand trees are part of a total of one million trees to be planted in 10 provinces.

The first lady, during the planting event, was flanked by Second lady Mufidah Jusuf Kalla, Environmental Affairs and Forestry Minister Situ Nurbaya, and wives of the cabinet ministers grouped in the Solidarity Action of the Working Cabinet Era (OASE KK).

Iriana planted Rhizophora mucronata and Pulai (Alstonia scholaris) trees on the occasion.

Tree planting activities were carried out simultaneously in Langkat regency in North Sumatra, Saleti Coast in East Lampung, Lemah Wungkuk
(Cirebon) in West Java, Sawo Jajar (Brebes) in Central Java, Tanah Bumbu in South Kalimantan, Pohuwato in Gorontalo, Donggala in Central Sulawesi,
Cereme Coast in West Nusa Tenggara, and Ambon Bay in Maluku, as well as Pandeglang in Banten.

Indonesia is among countries with the largest area of mangrove forests, which are among the most threatened habitats in the world.

Indonesia is blessed with fertile soil and various natural resources, but concurrently, the country is prone to natural disasters, as it is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, where numerous volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunami waves occur.

During the period from January to mid-December last year, a total of 2,572 natural disasters had hit the country, leaving at least 4,821 people dead or missing, according to the government data.

Of the total, 96.9 percent of the natural disasters were hydrometeorological in nature such as floods, landslides, and whirlwind, while 3.1 percent of them were geological disasters such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunami waves. (Antara)
