Jakarta: President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo attended a National Batik Day event at Mangkunegaran Palace, Solo, Central Java on Wednesday, October 2, 2019.
"UNESCO named batik as the world's intangible cultural heritage ten years ago," the former Jakarta governor said in his speech during the opening ceremony of the event.
"It has made us very proud," he stated.
President Jokowi said that UNESCO is currently evaluating its recognition. He hopes Indonesian people are motivated to help preserve the status.
He argued that National Batik Day can boost the country's commitment to develop batik. He believes that batik industry can improve the livelihood of people in many regions.
The media-savvy leader was accompanied by First Lady Iriana Widodo, Second Lady Mufidah Jusuf Kalla, State Secretary Minister Pratikno and other high ranking officials
The event was also attended by KGPAA Mangkunegara IX, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, Indonesian Batik Foundation chairman Jultin Ginanjar Kartasasmita and Financial Services Authority (OJK) chairman Wimboh Santoso.
