3 Breastfeeding Tips for Mothers with Covid-19

Raka Lestari • 18 August 2021 14:07
Jakarta: Breastfeeding is still viable for mothers with covid-19 as long as they implement strict health protocols.

"Breastfeeding can still be done even during the covid-19 pandemic," said dr. Meutia Ayuputeri, IBLB, CIM, MRes, lactation consultant at
Pondok Indah Hospital, in the Webinar : A – Z Success of Breastfeeding Mothers.

"If possible, it shouldn't be stopped," she said.

Moreover, dr. Meutia also stressed that mothers with covid-19 should continously monitor their health.

here are other recommendations from dr. Meutia.

1. Wear masks

"Covid-19 infected mothers should always wear masks because transmission happens through droplets. So to prevent transmission to the baby, it is best to wear masks whilst
breastfeeding," dr. Meutia said.

2. Wash your hands

Dr. Meutia suggests breastfeeding mothers to always keep their hands clean by washing hands before and after handling the baby. Make sure to wash your hands with soap or if soap is unavailable then you can use hand sanitizer.

3. Clean surfaces
"Other than that, don’t forget to clean the surface of tools routinely. Sometimes we don’t need special equipment to clean. Water and soap is fine," said dr. Meutia. (Translator: Natasha Celia)
