Jakarta: Addie MS had a chance to give a donation to Indonesian veterans. He was moved after meeting with former soldiers who fought for Indonesian Independence.
Supported by Germany Brilliant, the charity event was held to commemmorate Indonesian Independence Day on August 17. Before handing over his donation, Addie MS watched a video showing messages from the veterans about Indonesia’s condition.
“Honestly, I got goosebumps when I saw the video. I want to cry after hear their life stories. Moreover, my father was also a soldier,” Addie MS said at Germany Brilliant head office, Harapan Indah, Bekasi, on Thursday.
According to Addie, their messages and advice should be heard by the younger generation. In the recent legislative and presidential elections, Indonesian society was extremely polarized.
“I would admit that is one of my main concerns. Our society has been polarized due to regional and presidential elections. Some people are trying to take advantage of our diversity to disturb our unity,” said Addie.
For him, people should hear the life stories of war veterans so they can understand the importance of preserving independence. He also encouraged Indonesians to mend their political differences.
“We can learn about the difficulty of gaining independence from their struggle. They risked their body and soul for our freedom. Indonesia was born from diversity. We have been a diversed country from the beginning. Let’s be reunited, shall we?” stated Addie. (Translator: Rifqi Akbar)
