ASEAN Traditional Textile Symposium Held in Yogyakarta

Jakarta: The Seventh ASEAN Traditional Textile Symposium is being held in Yogyakarta on November 5-8, 2019.
 
The theme of the international symposium is "Embracing Change, Honoring Tradition."
 
Experts on traditional textiles from 16 nations, including the United States, Australia, South Korea, Japan, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, are attending the symposium.

The regional biennial symposium is highlighted by textile design and photography competitions.
 
According to head of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Sub-directorate of the Education and Culture Ministry Binsar Simanullang, the 2019 ASEAN Traditional Textile Symposium is expected to help support the preservation of Indonesia's intangible cultural heritage.
 
Consisting of hundreds of ethnic groups, Indonesia has at least 39 traditional textiles, including batik, ulos, and several other traditional woven clothing from different regions, recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage.
 
The Indonesian batik has been inscribed on the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
