medcom.id, Jakarta: Batik is the most popular traditional heritage in Indonesia. It has been known since the Hindu-Buddhist era.
Archaeologists found batik pattern in a statue from the Majapahit era. They identified it as Kawung batik pattern.
Written batik is the most traditional type of batik. It is made by batik artist using special tool called Canting.
"Written batik is the oldest type of batik. It is handmade. The materials and the process are very traditional," said Daromi, batik artist from Yogyakarta, at the National Museum, Jakarta, recently.
The process starts with washing the fabric. After it is dried and ironed, batik artist draws pattern in the fabric using a pencil.
After that, the batik artist puts wax in the fabric using a canting. "Lots of time is needed to finish one sheet of written batik," added Daromi.
"Written batik is softer than stamp batik or print batik. The price is also more expensive," Daromi concluded.
