Is it Safe for Children to Learn Diving?

medcom.id, Jakarta: Scuba diving has become popular water sport not only for adults, but also teenagers and children.

However, is it safe for children to learn how to dive?

The Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI) explained that children may acquire certification as Junior Open Water Diver when they reach 10 years old.

Before registering your children in a diving course, children must first answer these nine questions:

1. Is the child really want to dive? (Not influenced by parents or friends).

2. Is the child physically healthy?

3. Is the child comfortable to swim underwater?

4. Does the child have sufficient attention span to listen and discuss in the class, pool, open air briefing and other interactions with diving instructors?

5. Can the child learn, memorize and practice the regulations and safety principals?

6. Does the child have good reading ability to study the materials for grown ups?

7. Can the child be comfortable enough to share discomfort or any unclear issues to someone less familiar to them such as the instructors?

8. Does the child have sufficient self control and ability to encounter problems by following regulations and asking for help?

9. Does the child have the ability to understand and discuss situational hypotheses and basic concepts such as time and space?

Aside from that, the child should be able to swim before they take scuba course. "They should be able to swim 100 meters without any buoys," said Yudhi, the Cakrawala team Safety and host of Taro Ranger when met by Metrotvnews.com, recently.

Moreover, before they learn diving, children are advised to be good at snorkeling. "Because breathing techniques could be learned from snorkeling," concluded Yudhi.
