Global Music Sales Trends in the Recent Year

Agustinus Shindu Alpito • 29 March 2016 13:38
medcom.id, Jakarta: The music sales trend in the United States within 2014-2015 has shown an interesting graphic, which is the reigning streaming services and declining digital sales based on full-album downloads.

The situation in the US may represent the global music sales trends, although not entirely similar if compared to the phenomenon in Indonesia.

In Indonesia, there is no institution officially releasing music sales data to public, such as conducted by Recording Industry Association of America.

The graphic shows an increase of black-plate physical format release by 32 percent. Meanwhile, the compact disc format declined by 17 percent.

In the digital world, not all sales went upward. The full-album downloads have declined by 5 percent, as well as the sales on singles by 13 percent. Meanwhile, the subscribers for streaming music services rose by 52 percent.

Global Music Sales Trends in the Recent Year

The music sales in the US have reached USD7 billion since 2010. In 2015, the music sales have reached USD7.02 billion, rising by less than a percent if compared to 2014.

The released data also shows the music consumers behavior, who shifted to music streaming. Previously, the trend is downloading music through the available virtual music stores.

The surge on streaming services is closely related to the presence of Apple Music and Tidal last year. In the US, the income from music streaming users are recorded at USD1.2 billion. If added with the free music streaming platform and internet radio, the total income of streaming reaches USD2.4 billion.

This fact differs from 2006, when iTunes was just starting to be considered as a new alternative of music sales. Recording companies were still able to take USD9.4 million from CD sales in the United States. It was more than the total income of the entire music sales in various formats currently.

One of the rising trends is also on advertisement through YouTube music videos, despite the royalties through the video-sharing site is still in cents, which is still smaller if compared to the royalties of the CDs' golden era.
