medcom.id:, Jakarta: In a press conference on Thursday (11/5/2015), Lazada explained the online shopping trend in Indonesia, as well as five other countries where it operates. One of the interesting issue conveyed by Magnus Ekbom, the CEO of Lazada Indonesia, is about the payment methods selected by Indonesian people.
In the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, consumers often used the methods of COD payment (Cash on Delivery), a method allowing the consumers to pay when they received the goods they ordered.
Meanwhile, in two other countries, Malaysia and Singapore, the favorite payment method is the ePayment. What is mentioned by ePayment is by using credit cards, debit cards or other eWallet.
One of the most interesting idea, according to Ekbom, Indonesia is the only country which love the payment method of manual banking or transfer. The second favorite payment method in Indonesia is ePayment. Even then, Ekbom is pessimistic that this payment method will become more popular in the future.
"So far, credit cards have been used by at least 5 percent of consumers in Indonesia. This number has not changed for several years," Ekbom said.
He suspected that the payment system to be favored in the future is the mobile payment. The reason is the high penetration level of mobile gadgets in Indonesia. However, he doubts that all mobile payment providers in Indonesia will be successful.
"Currently there are 20 mobile payment providers in Indonesia. And we are still waiting on which one to become the strongest provider of mobile payment," said Ekbom.
Lazada alone provides the mobile payment named as helloPay. The payment system was just available in Singapore and the Philippines. Lazada plans to use helloPay to other countries, but unfortunately he was not able to provide specific plans on when the payment system will be applied in Indonesia.
