Can Indonesian Film Win Oscar?

medcom.id, Jakarta: The Academy Awards, or the Oscar, has become the barometer within the cinematic world. Although Oscar is known as the feat meant for the Hollywood commercial films, it does not close its eyes on films from foreign countries.
 
Entering the nomination and becoming the winner in the category of Best Foreign Film in the Oscar is a pride for movie makers beyond Hollywood. However, it is not an easy task to triumph in the Oscars, as there are thousands of films competing to be the best there.
 
Indonesia had registered several movies to the Academy Awards. One of them is Daun di Atas Bantal. Unfortunately, the film starred by Christine Hakim stopped at the big 15.

Garin Nugroho, the director of Daun di Atas Bantal, who had also gotten many international awards, said the possibility of Indonesia passing through the main nomination of the Oscar is still open.
 
"There is always a possibility. It depends who is making, whether he wants to use European or American style. If it were me, I have no dreams of entering (the category of) Foreign in Oscar," mentioned Garin when met in Petogogan, South Jakarta, Tuesday (11/24/2015).
 
Moreover, to break through the big 25 in the Academy Awards is not easy. The fund needed is not cheap. Movie makers should promote their film totally in US media, for the judges to be interested in watching.
 
The form of such promotion is crucial in determining whether the film can pass through the next phase.
 
"If it breaks through big 25, it is expensive. Has to make a commercial. Not how many years that we can be in the Oscar. Next year is possible, depending on the movie," affirmed Garin.
 
According to the director of the film 'Aach… Aku Jatuh Cinta', Indonesian film makers currently have the ability to make good quality film.
 
"Some (directors) are capable. Joko Anwar's piece in HBO (Halfworlds) for example, it can be submitted as it has good Indonesian character. 'Siti' in the US can be in the special festivals, but it is impossible to enter Foreign in Oscar. It depends on the generation of film makers," explained Garin.
