History of Babah and Nyai in Indonesia

medcom.id, Cirebon: Chinese people has long history in the archipelago. Chinese influence could be seen in local dances, musics,foods and batiks.
 
Inter-marriage between chinese people and the natives created terms like Babah and Nyai.
 
"Chinese man marrying native was called Babah, while Chinese woman marrying native nobleman was called Nyai," said Chinese culture expert, Jeremy Huang to Metrotvnews.com
 
In Cirebon, West Java, the term was used from 1700s to 1970s. There was also other nicknames associated with Chinese people such as Taoke.
 
"Taoke is a nickname for rich Chinese man," Jeremy explained.
