medcom.id, Jakarta: Purchasing used cars currently has become an alternative for some people to own vehicles with a relatively affordable price. However, it is still a used car, meaning that it has lacking features compared to a new unit.
But there are still used cars sellers who played their customers, resulting with the consumer's loss. "There are lots of evil tricks from the used car traders to gain more profit, despite the consumer's loss," said Halomoan Fischer, Chief Operation Officer Mobil88.
Fischer mentioned that one of the tricks is to roll the vehicle's odometer. Simply by opening the speedometer, and shift it with small screwdriver, then the odometer may be turned into lower numbers.
"To know the types of reduced odometers, the scrape marks of the screwdrivers are clearly seen. Then, the number is not aligned, as some might be slanted. It is the indication that the odometer has been tampered with," he explained recently.
Then what about the digital odometer in the younger cars? It can still be tampered with, without any marks visible.
"It is a bit tricky, I have seen them using a special software and laptops. Taking the cables from behind the dashboard, and they are able to change the odometer. You can just order the 'beautiful number', and the fee for changing this odometer is Rp200,000," he explained.
Even so, cars with digital odometers can be seen from the usage marks, such as visible from the steering wheel, driver's seat and the tyre. They have significant marks saying that the car has been used for quite some time.
Using regular service books are also not helping, as according to Fischer, the mid-low vehicles are rarely services in the official auto shop. "Even if there is, the data between the shops are not centralized yet, as it will make it more difficult, even with the same brand," he elaborated.
And another evil trick, which is the worst, is the 'banana oil'. From Fischer's experience, he had seen a car with 'banana oil', whereas he just took the car for reselling, with a normal engine sound.
"But before it is sold, we change the oil and all, as afterwards the machine sounded rough. The sitting metal has been hit, and we suspect that the engine oil was mixed with banana to make it thicker and suppressed the sound of the engine," he mentioned.
He thinks that there are other tricks used by the naughty used car sellers. Therefore, it would be best to ask warranty from the seller, should the car purchased experience troubles.
