One of the underestimated components and lack attention for some people is the hand brakes. Nevertheless, this particular component has an important role in the braking system, especially for four-wheeled vehicles or more.
Hand brakes are usually utilized when a car is parked or stopped, or when it is at a slanted roads, both climbs or dips. More importantly, it plays the role as emergency brake when the main brake malfunctions.
It is better to check the condition of hand brake in your vehicle prior to holiday travel. One of the methods is to clean the dish/plate of the brake. For a normal use, cleaning the dish may be conducted every 1,000 to 2,000 kilometers.
Aside from that, check the condition of brake pads entirely, as a thin brake pad may cause an decrease of performance of braking, as it would destroy the dish due to continuous friction from the steel parts of the used brake pads.
To check or repair the function of hand brake, it is sufficient to change the rear brake pads, as the hand brake system relies on the rear wheels.
"Hand brake clutch that is too high when pulled may indicate the thin brake pads on the rear wheels. If it is changed into new ones, automatically the settings of hand brakes would be lower. The height of hand brake clutch may also be set up according to personal preferences, as it could also be done to enhance the braking action," explained Mislam, a Speed Shop owner in East Bekasi, West Java.
