medcom.id, Jakarta: The position of holding a steering wheel is the most important technique while driving. Surely it is important to understand the proper technique of holding or handling the steer to maintain control over the car.
Rifat Sungkar, Director of Rifat Drive Labs, explained that many people has not yet understand how to properly handle the wheel-shaped component. Moreover, there are lots of wrong ways to hold the steer, which become a habit while driving.
"Even those who have been driving for years do not know how to properly handle the steering wheel. Sometimes they are holding it wrong, and it is dangerous for them," explained Rifat when met several weeks earlier in Jakarta.
The most common mistake conducted, according to Rifat, is driving with one hand. "The danger is that one hand would not be stable enough to hold the steer. There are lots of fatal incidents, especially during fatigue condition, that a car may slip and slide into different lane."
"Other mistake is both hands gathering at one point. This position makes the steering maneuver not maximized and effective while conducting a turn, which definitely interrupt the driving process. The position should be on the three-o'clock and nine-o'clock. It resulted in better overall control of the vehicle,"
"Lastly is the thumb locking the steering handle. This position may cause injuries and blocks the hand control over the steering wheel. So it is better that the thumb is not locked at the inside position. It is also related to airbag explosion. If the thumb is locked within the steering, most likely it would rip the main finger of the hand," he concluded.
Thus, it is crucial to pay attention on the safe positions to hold control of the car. (Eps)
