Three Causes of Antibiotic Resistance

Sri Yanti Nainggolan • 21 April 2016 19:21
medcom.id, Jakarta: The issue antibiotic resistance has acquired special attention in the health sector.

Prof. Dr. dr. Kustaman, Ms., Sp.MK (K) from the Committee of Anti-microbes Resistance Control (KPRA) explained that there are three causes of antibiotics resistance in human bodies.

First, the overuse of antibiotics due to the lack of control from prescriber or the initiative of antibiotics users.

"Fifty percent of antibiotics resistance occurs due to overuse. We should have kept antibiotics (according to prescription) to avoid overuse," he said in a media briefing of One Health Approach, in Jakarta, Tuesday (4/19/2016).

Secondly, the antibiotics misuse. Many have used antibiotics without the doctor's advise that they cause resistance against an antibiotic.

Third, underuse of antibiotics. The resistance may occur if someone does not complete the prescription suggested by the doctor.

The patient stopped drinking it, but finishes it at some point. Meanwhile, the bacteria inside the body has created an immune system.

Kustaman also explained that there are selection processes inside the body causing antibiotics resistance.

"There are a billion bacteria inside a human body. If we bomb all of it, there will be at least one bacteria resisted and multiplied," he explained.

Therefore, a prevention of selection process should be conducted, where proper usage of antibiotics are conducted.
