medcom.id, Jakarta: Chairman of Indonesian Vehicles Industry Association (GAIKINDO), Johnny Darmawan mentioned that the industry producing the components for automotive products in Indonesia is still lacking. If compared to the numbers owned by Thailand, the domestic component industry also lost.
"So far our supporting industry is still around 700-ish. But we are totally outnumbered by Thailand, as they have 2,500-ish supporting industries," Johnny said in the Jakarta Auto Show (JAS) 2015 at Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Senayan, South Jakarta, Wednesday (10/28/2015).
He added that the power of automotive industry to develop cannot be seen from its sales only, but also the supporting industry. He wishes that the automotive production is not to be consumed domestically, but also exported to other countries.
"Since the automotive industry is not about assembling and selling the cars, there is the supporting industry involved there. And if the supporting components industry rises, export can be even better," he added.
A similar idea was delivered by the Director General of Metal, Machines, Transportation and Electronics Tools (ILMATE) of the Ministry of Industry, I Gusti Putu Suryawirawan. He stated that the government is required to provide incentive to boost the growth of components industry.
"To boost our automotive industry's growth, we need to develop the supporting components industry. However, to develop that, we need to establish the standardization first. Aside from that, the government should provide incentive to invite investments," he concluded.
