The Decline of Written Batik

Putu Radar Bahurekso • 23 May 2016 16:57
medcom.id, Jakarta: Written batik is the oldest type of Batik. It has long history and high cultural value.

However, the development of printed batik has caused a decline in the traditional written batik industry. Most young batik entrepreneurs are more interested in printed batik because it is more profitable.

"The older generation still makes written batik, but the younger generation prefers printed batik," said Indonesian batik expert, Budi Mulyawan, recently.

"The production of batik is increasing but its cultural value is diminishing," he continued.

Budi admitted the younger generation is not wrong to pursue economic welfare. Nevertheless, written batik as Indonesia's cultural heritage must be preserved.

"Written batik cannot accommodate market demands. It is also too expensive," he concluded.
