What Kind of Rice Better to be Consumed by Diabetic?

medcom.id, Jakarta: People having diabetes must have heard that they should consume rice cooked a day before to reduce the sugar level. According to the expert of internal diseases of RSCM, dr. Tri Juli Edi Tarigan Sp.PD-KEMD, FINASIM, eating today's rice or yesterday is basically the same.

"Well, eating yesterday's rice or today's has no difference at all," he said when met at Akmani Hotel, Jakarta (9/1/2015).

He thinks the patients with diabetes may consume everything as normal people does, as long as the portion is balanced. He even explained that there are no restrictions for the diabetics to consume carbohydrates.

"Good source of carbohydrates are rice, potato, bread, or taro, where there is no problem if consumed by diabetes patients as long as the calories are enough," he continued.

Not only rice, there are also myths that they are forbidden to eat lots of vegetables as it is feared to have negative effect on the patient's uric acid.

"How can they be forbidden to eat vegetables. However, diabetes needs lots of fiber, as it obtained from vegetables. So, it is only a myth," he affirmed.

Because of that, dr. Tri Juli has always suggested diabetes patients to believe in the doctors more than the myths spreading in the society.

"This kind of myths should be eliminated in steps, by educating more. It is a pity that diabetic patients can't eat well due to the myths," he mentioned.

dr. Tri Juli also suggested for diabetic patients to conduct routine consultations with a nutritionist in order to obtain good and balanced meal portions to stabilize their blood sugars. (Sumarni)
