The Benefits of Baby Massage

medcom.id, Jakarta: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the bonds between parent and child is crucial factor influencing baby's physical and mental developments.
 
Several ways can be done to grow the bonds. One of them is through a 'baby massage'.
 
President Commissioner of Bundamedik Health Care System, Ivan Rizal Sini, mentioned baby massage has lots of benefits both for the baby and parent.
 
"With the massage, the body will be more relaxed and the baby can sleep longer and better. Massage may also ease colic and pain due to teeth growth, lowering the production of stressor hormones, as well as assisting the development of digestive, respiration and circulation system," explained Ivan at health education seminar in Jakarta, Monday (4/4/2016).
 
 
On the other hand, parents could understand the baby's non-verbal language. "So parents may become more confident in taking care of their children," mentioned Ivan.

Baby massage is not easy, as baby's bones and skin are still fragile. 
These are the correct method of baby massage.
 
1. Apply enough pressure to stimulate massaged body parts. Healthy baby generally does not like light massage, as it tickles.
 
2. Massage only for 10 minutes for the newborns. They tend to be more sensitive as they feel stimulation faster. For older babies, the duration may extend to 20 minutes.
 
3. There are six parts of the body needed to be massaged: the face, chest, hands, stomach, feet and back.
 
4. It is crucial for parent or nurse to be cautious and alert to the baby's response during the massage. 
 
5. It is advised to use massage oil in providing the relaxation and peace effects to the babies. Massaging with oil may also reduce the frictions between the hands and baby's body, to ease the massage process.
