9 Facts on HIV/AIDS

medcom.id, Jakarta: Commemorating the World AIDS Day, which falls on December 1, the human immunideficiency virus (HIV) AIDS is still one of the most significant challenges against public health in the world.
 
Thomson Reuters Foundation recorded that young women in the small and mid income countries such as the sub-Sahara of Africa became one of the highest risks of being exposed with the HIV/AIDS virus with a high amount of number.
 
HIV/AIDS virus was first identified in 1984. To show the support for those with HIV/AIDS (ODHA) and remembering those who died due to the virus, December 1 is commemorated as the World AIDS Day.
 
Aside from that, there are other facts surrounding HIV/AIDS in 2015, based on the data owned by the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and UNAIDS, among others;
 
1. Globally, there are 36.9 million people, including 2.6 million children living with HIV.
 
2. As estimated, there are two million people infected by HIV AIDS virus in 2014.
 
3. The number of teenage deaths caused by AIDS tripled within the past 15 years.
 
4. It is estimated that more than 34 million people have died due to HIV AIDS, including 1.2 million occurring in 2014 alone.
 
5. AIDS is the number one cause of death for teenagers in Africa and second globally.
 
6. Sub-Sahara Africa is the region with the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS infection, with 7 out of 10 female teens infected by the deadly virus.
 
7. Early 2015, 15 million people received antiretroviral therapy. The number exceeded 2001, whereas only a million had received the medication for HIV infection.
 
8. 51 percent of people with HIV noticed their status without going through tests.
 
9. Cuba is the first country successfully eliminated the spread of HIV from mothers to children.
