Wahyu Dwi Anggoro • 31 December 2019 17:48
Jakarta: The 10th Iraw Tengkayu Festival at the Amal Beach, Tarakan, North Kalimantan, is considered as the best way to advance the tourism sector as well as being an attraction for domestic and foreign tourists to visit Tarakan.

According to Tarakan Mayor Khairul, the festival is a merging of cultural wealth and tourist attractions, which can invite tourists to come to the City of Tarakan.

"This might be the best momentum for the City of Tarakan to promote its tourism. The charm of Tarakan hereditary culture packed with the natural beauty of the Amal coast issl going to become an exciting tourist attraction," Khairul said in a press release issued on Monday, December 30, 2019.

The 10th Tengkayu Iraw Festival took place over two days, starting from December 21-22 2019. The event was filled with various activities such as cultural carnivals to folk parties that present the famous singer Erie Suzan.

The core of the Tengkayu Iraw Festival, which has been going on for generations, is the procession of Padaw Tuju Dulung boat: an ornamental boat that is paraded around the city. At the bottom of the boat-mounted several bamboo blades, which are used by young people to transport Padaw Tuju Dulung.

Tengkayu Iraw is a native Tidung tradition which is intended to give thanks for the blessings of the God. Iraw means party, and Tengkayu means "a small island in the middle of the sea," which is Tarakan Island.

The process of banning the Padaw Tuju Dulung or "the seven pillars" embedded on the boat symbolized people's lives in search of daily livelihoods. The boats are decorated with the distinctive colors of the Tidung tribe, which are yellow, green, and red.

Tengkayu Iraw Festival is held every two years, but going forward, Khairul promises that the Tengkayu Iraw Festival will be held every year.

"It will be a missed opportunity if this celebration is only done once every two years. Therefore, in 2020 we will hold another celebration of Tengkayu Iraw," explained Khairul.

Tengkayu Iraw has also been established as an intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Hopefully, the implementation of the Tengkayu Iraw Festival will continue to be of high quality and present increasingly exciting content.
