Surabaya: Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini believes the custom-built Joyoboyo Bridge, which also has a colorful fountain as well as a garden, will become the new icon of the capital East Java Province.
"It is not just a bridge, it can also be one of Surabaya's icons," the mayor said during the groundbreaking event here on Thursday, March 5, 2020.
According to her, the city is developing rather quickly, and the Wonokromo Bridge, which provides access in and out of the city, is no longer enough to accommodate movements.
"For that reason, in terms of accessibility, we are building this bridge to smoothen the traffic flow, especially in and out of the city," the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician said.
Designed to become a recreational spot and tourist attraction for the city, there will be a spot from where visitors can admire the view of the city.
Made out of reinforced concrete and voided slabs, the structure measures 150 meters in length, 17 meters in width and 20 meters in height.
"The contract value is Rp39 billion. It was signed in October 15, 2019 and the approximate time for completion is 420 days," Head of the Surabaya Public Works Office, Erna Purnawati, said.
However, the targeted completion date for the bridge is sometime in October 2020. (Antara)
