Jakarta: Tourism Minister Arief Yahya strongly believes that Indonesia can top the 2019 Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) which is set to be announced in April.
"Our halal tourism growth is projected to reach an all-time high of around 42 percent this year," the minister told reporters on Thursday.
The target of halal tourist arrivals is set at 5 million this year. The number is up 42 percent compared to the previous year.
"The target of 5 million halal tourist arrivals makes up 25 percent of the target of overall tourist arrivals for this year at 20 million," he added.
GMTI applies 14 components in the criteria of ACES (Access, Communications, Environment, as well as Services) with different scores. Access has a score of 10 percent, Communications 15 percent, Environment 30 percent, and Services 45 percent.
"In total, nearly 90 percent is service components and 10 percent is halal component," he revealed.
He expressed hope that Indonesia will be the best this year. GMTI named Malaysia as the best halal tourist destination in the world last year
Quoting a report from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the country welcomed 1.41 million foreign tourist arrivals in December 2018. It increased by 21.43 percent compared to the previous month.
In the meantime, the room occupancy rate (TPK) of star classification hotels in Indonesia reached an average of 59.75 percent in December 2018. It decreased by 0.44 percentage point compared to the previous month. (Antara)
