"We highlight the crucial role of tourism as a means of sustainable socioeconomic development," the ministers said in a communique following their virtual meeting.

According to the ministers, the travel and tourism sector contributed to 10.3 percent of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 330 million jobs in 2019.

In addition, it accounted for 28 percent of the world’s service exports last year.

"We stress that the travel and tourism sector is one of the most heavily impacted sectors by the covid-19 pandemic, with an anticipated 60-80 percent decline in international tourism in 2020," the ministers stated.

"We recognize that covid-19 may result in a paradigm shift for the travel and tourism sector," they added.
