Bandung: As the one of the largest archipelagic nations in the world, Indonesia has a huge potential of marine tourism, according to a marine science expert.

"Sustainability is an important point," said Padjadjaran University's marine science expert (Unpad) Tri Dewi Kusumaningrum Pribadi in a press release on Thursday.

According to data published by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Indonesia has 99 thousand kilometers of coastline and 3.257 million square kilometers of sea.

It also has 20.87 hectares of conservation areas that could potentially be managed as marine tourism.

In addition, there are other marine resources, such as diverse coral reefs, mangrove areas, and marine biota.

According to her, the government has established 10 prioritized tourist destinations in Indonesia, 8 of which are marine tourisms sites.
