medcom.id, Solo: Character of Hanuman and Sun Wukong were picked as mascots for Chinese New Year celebration in Solo, Central Java this year.
The two characters were selected to symbolize harmony between various ethnic groups in the city. Hanuman is character in Ramayana tale which is a popular epic among Javanese people. While Sun Wukong is character from Journey to the West tale which is originated in China.
The chief of Chinese New Year celebration joint committee, Sumartono Hadinoto said both characters are exemplary and extraordinary figures.
"Both Hanuman and Sunn Wukong are heroes," he said in Solom Thursday (1/21/2016).
Sumatono hopes the mascots could inspire public to maintain unity in the city. The pictures of Hanuman and Sun Wukong will be spread in City Hall and several malls.
Chinese New Year celebration in Solo consists of several events including festival, water lanterns and shadow puppets show. Hundreds of people will also broke Indonesian record for the largest Chinese calligraphy. The celebration will be centered in Pasar Gede.
"The committee will also hold charity and social services," Sumartono concluded.
