medcom.id, Yogyakarta: The Yogyakarta Provincial Governmentt is going to develop Malioboro Street. The legendary icon of Yogyakarta will be more pedestrian-friendly.
Vehicles will no longer be allowed to enter the street except for public transportation and vehicles heading to Gedung Agung Presidential Palace which is located in Malioboro area.
"State guests or officials heading to Gedung Agung may still enter Malioboro street," said Yogyakarta Provincial Government's public works official Mohammad Mansyur, Yogyakarta, Friday (4/8/2016)
The Yogyakarta Provincial Government will also manage street vendors in the area. "We will not relocate them, we will just manage them, he stated.
He explained that the project is part of the effort to revitalize Yogyakarta's philosophical axis.
"One of the uniqueness of Yogyakarta's spatial planning is the imaginary axis connecting Mount Merapi in the north and the Southern Coast. In this imaginary axis, there are several landmarks which have philosophical values," he explained.
"For example, Pal Putih Monument represents Lingga while Panggung Krapyak Bantul represents Yoni," he continued.
