The mosque is also known as Ki Ageng Henis Mosque as it was constructed by a cleric named Ki Ageng Henis. He was spiritual teacher of Sultan Hadiwijaya.
Ki Ageng Henis also had important role in the development of batik industry in the village. He was the person who taught the residents how to make batik.
"Now the place is called Laweyan Batik Village," said Laweyan Mosque head Achmad Sulaiman to Metrotvnews.com recently.

The mosque underwent major renovation during Surakarta Sunanate era. However, visitor still can find the original bedug drum inside the mosque.
"It has been there since the mosque was built," Achmad stated.
