Pinisi Boat, Forgotten Masterpiece from South Sulawesi

Putu Radar Bahurekso • 21 December 2015 22:55
medcom.id, Jakarta: Pinisi is a type of traditional sailing boat from South Sulawesi. Pinisi boat is different from any other sailing boats.

The Pinisi boat have two main masts with seven sails. It is different with regular sailing boats, which only have one main mast with a single or double sail.

"The Pinisi boat is a masterpiece from Sulawesi, precisely in Bulukumba Regency, Bira Village. It is the hometown of the Pinisi makers. Moreover, the Pinisi has smaller chambers inside it. Another difference is that the construction of Pinisi started from the outer parts, then the frame," mentioned Mansur Amin, the Chairman of the Sunda Kelapa Heritage when met in Kemang, Jakarta.

For Pinisi makers, the Pinisi boat is not just a boat. The vessel has been considered as a son for its maker. Long construction process with various sacred ceremonies have turned this vessel into an invaluable boat.

However, the Pinisi Boat currently has started to be forgotten. Indonesia even no longer has a real Pinisi.

Mansur Amin mentioned that during a research to Sulawesi in 2013, the boat makers in the region said original Pinisi is no longer exist. What is left is not an original Pinisi, but rather an ordinary sailboat categorically different from Pinisi boat.

"Now, what have been spread in various locations of Indonesia are not Pinisi, but already within the category of sailboat. No longer Pinisi," Mansur mentioned.

"Even what is in Sunda Kelapa (traditional port in Jakarta) now is not a Pinisi, but a  sailboat with engine, which you can say an evolution of Pinisi as the real one does not use any engine," he stated.
