medcom.id, Jakarta: Tenun Timor (Timor Weaving) started to be noticed and loved by the societies beyond East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) by the end of 1970s, following the opening of trade lines. Not only spotted by local tourists, the fabric is also loved by foreign nationals.
It has started a new development in the motive design of Tenun Timor. Several designs which were only meant to local cultural community, such as the head of the tribe or other elders of the tribe started to be produced by tourists.
"Several motives of the fabric, which can only be used by the elders in the certain cultural villages have also been produced for tourists liking the motive. It occurred within the 70s, especially after 1975, as there are cruise ship lines heading there," mentioned Judi Achjadi, the Honorary Curator for the Textile Museum Festival 2015 in the Textile Museum, Jakarta.
The weaving fabric is one of the items loved by the tourists when visiting Timor. It has made the Tenun artists in Timor continue to grow.
"Surely following the arrival of the tourists there, several motives have been intended for sale to the tourists, as it is also their economic needs. But the earliest development occurred in the regions by the bay," said Judi Achjadi.
As years gone by, surely Tenun Timor continued to expand. Not only sold in fabric form, it is now being sold in the forms of clothing, using the Tenun Timor motives.
Tenun Timor is one of the cultural products and treasure of the Timor Island, East Nusa Tenggara, as the province is famous for its weaving fabric.
