Jakarta: Vice President Jusuf Kalla inspected the Jakarta mass rapid transit (MRT) project at Bundaran Hotel Indonesia in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, February 20, 2019.

The former Golkar Party chairman took a test ride from Bundaran Hotel Indonesia to Lebak Bulus. The Buginese politician then visited a workshop near Lebak Bulus station.

"The ride is very comfortable. It is also on time," Kalla told journalists during the visit.

"Your journey could managed easily. It will be opened next month," Kalla added.

The first phase of the project will connect Lebak Bulus to Bundaran Hotel Indonesia. It will consist of 7 elevated stations and 6 underground stations.

For the Lebak Bulus-Bundaran Hotel Indnesia route, the region-owned company has ordered at least 16 trainsets. According to reports, a trainset can accommodate as many as 1,800 passengers.

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan earlier hinted that the ticket price would be announced this month. He also added that the mass rapid transit could be integrated with other modes of transportation.

The Greater Jakarta region comprises Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi. The area has a population of more than 28 million people.

It is the most populous urban area in Indonesia. It is also the center of government and economy of the country.

The central government has ordered regional leaders to improve infrastructure systems in Jabodetabek. It has allocated funds to help resolve traffic congestion and its negative impacts.
