Jakarta: According to the latest Retail Sales Survey conducted by Bank Indonesia (BI) in May 2021, retailers predicted another period of annual sales moderation, as indicated by a Real Sales Index of 202.3 and the pace of growth slowing to 4.5% (yoy) from 14.7% (yoy) in June 2021.
"Respondents confirmed broad retail sales deceleration across most commodity groups, particularly Spare Parts and Accessories as well as Food, Beverages and Tobacco, while sales of Information and Communication Equipment and Cultural and Recreational Goods slipped into contraction," said BI Communication Department Head Erwin Haryono in a press release on Friday.
On a monthly basis, retail sales are expected to contract -11.1% (mtm) in June 2021 in response to the normalisation of private consumption after the recent Eid-ul-Fitr holiday period, mainly affecting Clothing as well as Food, Beverages and Tobacco.
Previously, monthly and annual retail sales performance pointed to positive growth in May 2021, with the Real Sales Index (RSI) growing 3.2% (mtm) and 14.7% (yoy) compared with 17.3% (mtm) and 15.6% (yoy) respectively in April 2021.
Retailers expected slower sales momentum as demand continues to normalise after the seasonal peak during the Ramadan festive period, coupled with mobility restrictions over Eid-ul-Fitr to break the domestic chain of Covid-19 transmission.
The commodity groups hardest hit included Food, Beverages and Tobacco as well as Clothing.
In terms of prices, retailers are anticipating milder inflationary pressures in the next 3 and 6 months (August and November).
The 3-month Price Expectations Index (PEI) decreased to a level of 124.4 based on the orderly distribution of goods, while the 6-month PEI declined to 119.9 from 134.0 given the unimpeded distribution of goods and adequate supply.
