Jakarta: Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi is optimistic that the second phase of Jakarta mass rapid transit (MRT) project could be started next month.

"The groundbreaking ceremony may take place next month," the minister said here on Wednesday, February 20, 2019.

The second phase of the project will connect Bundaran Hotel Indonesia to Jakarta Old Town. It is expected to be operational in 2024.

Earlier today, Vice President Jusuf Kalla visited a Jakarta MRT station at Bundaran Hotel Indonesia. During the visit, the former Golkar Party chairman took a test ride to Lebak Bulus station.

"The ride is very comfortable. It is also on time," Kalla told journalists during the trip.

The first phase of the project will connect Bundaran Hotel Indonesia to Lebak. It is scheduled to be officially opened in mid-March.

For the Lebak Bulus-Bundaran Hotel Indnesia route, the region-owned company has ordered at least 16 trainsets. According to reports, a trainset can accommodate as many as 1,800 passengers.

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan earlier hinted that the ticket price would be announced this month. He also added that the mass rapid transit could be integrated with other modes of transportation.

"The tariff scheme will be announced around mid to late February," Anies told reporters early this year.

The Greater Jakarta region comprises Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi. The area has a population of more than 28 million people.

It is the most populous urban area in Indonesia. It is also the center of government and economy of the country.
