Kutai Kartanegara: President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo inaugurated the Section 2-4 of the Balikpapan-Samarinda toll road. The first toll road in Kalimantan is the gateway to the new capital city.

"This toll road is connected directly to the nation’s new capital region," Jokowi said at the Samboja Toll Gate, Kutai Kertanegara, East Kalimantan on Tuesday, December 17, 2019.

Jokowi explained that the toll road will be extended to the center of the nation’s new capital. This toll road also connects Pranoto Airport, Samarinda, with Sepinggan Airport, Balikpapan.

"We expect it to be beneficial that this toll road connnects two airports," he said.

The toll road construction is believed to cut the Balikpapan-Samarinda travel time, from initially three hours to one hour. The toll road development also encourages the growth of industrial zones in the oil palm and oil & gas sectors.

"Usually from Samarinda to Balikpapan and vice versa requires 6 hours. Now it's just three hours so that we really get the speed and efficiency," explained Jokowi.

Jokowi targets the construction of the 99.7 kilometer toll road to be fully completed by July 2020. The central and regional governments poured IDR2.8 trillion worth of funds. Meanwhile, the Toll Road Business Entity (BUJT) generated IDR9.97 trillion of funds.

For the sections 2-4, the construction use the funds of the BUJT namely PT Jasa Marga Balikpapan-Samarinda (JMBS). Jasa Marga holds a 62.1 percent stake, while the rest is owned by Wijaya Karya and PT PP.
