Jakarta: Nickel Miners Association of Indonesia (APNI) is expecting the official announcement of a regulation which will restrict the importation of nickel ore which is expected to take effect today.

“We will wait for the official announcement," APNI Secretary General Meidy Katrin Lengkey said here on Tuesday, October 29, 2019.

Meidy said that APNI appreciated the regulation. She explained that the regulation also highlighted several other urgent issues.

According to the APNI official, the government has finally listened to the association’s appreciation.

Meidy said that the regulation is based on an agreement between the Investment Coordination Board (BKPM) and the Indonesian Processing and Smelting Compamies Association (AP31). She stressed that the agreement is in line with APNI's demands.

First, the domestic sale price must be based on mineral reference price (HPM) starting from  November 2019. Second, the ore content must be 1.7 percent. Third, a third-party surveyor must be involved should surveyors from both the buying and selling parties have different result.

Fourth, the government must punish corporations that do not follow the HPM. Fifth, APNI is still expecting legal certainty in the form of regulation which covers domestic nickel trade. Sixth, APNI will supervise the trade of nickel ore.

Previously, BPKM Head, Bahlil Lahadalia, said that the regulation will take effect on Tuesday, October 29, 2019. The agreement was reached during a meeting between Bahlil and AP3I members. The government initially planned to implement the regulation in January 2020. (Translator: Muhammad Gestinev)
