Number of Unemployed People in Indonesia Rises to 9.77 Million in August

Jakarta: The number of unemployed people across Indonesia increased by 2.67 million to 9.77 million in August 2020, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) said on Wednesday.
 
According to BPS Chairman Suhariyanto, the country's unemployment rate significantly increased due to the impacts of the covid-19 pandemic.
 
"Due to covid-19 crisis, the number of unemployed people increased by 2.67 million," said the BPS chairman during a video press conference here on Thursday morning.

In Agustus 2020, the number of workforce in Indonesia reached 138.22 million, while the number of employed people in the country reached 128.45 million.
 
Meanwhile, in the third quarter of 2020, Indonesia officially entered recession after its economy shrank by 3.49 percent year-on-year.
 
However, compared to the previous quarter, the country's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 5.05 percent last quarter.
