Rising Airline Fares Could Affect Inflation in End of 2019: BPS

Husen Miftahudin • 02 December 2019 17:55
Jakarta: The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has warned that increasing airline fares during Christmas and New Year holidays could affect annual inflation rate in the end of 2019.

"We should monitor airplane fares. The demand is usually higher at the time. It will increase airline fares," BPS chairman Suhariyanto said here on Monday, December 2, 2019.

In the meantime, the agency predicted that food prices will be stable in the end of this year. Nevertheless, it admitted that food prices usually increase during Christmas and New Year holidays.

"You should not worry about rice prices. Prices of unpeeled rice  at farmer level increased one percent in the past few months. However, prices of unpeeled rice at retailer level only increased around 0.12 percent at the same period. Rice prices are predicted to be stable in December 2019," he explained.

The agency earlier announced that Indonesia recorded an inflation rate of 0.14 percent in November 2019. It also revealed that Indonesia's annual inflation rate stood at three percent last month.

According to BPS chairman Suhariyanto, 57 cities surveyed by the agency experienced inflation, while other 25 cities experienced deflation.
