Jakarta: Transportation Ministry's railway director general Zulkifri is optimistic that the greater Jakarta light rail transit (LRT) project would be fully operational by 2021.
"The progress of the whole project has reached 58 percent. The progress of the Cibubur-Cawang section has reached 70 percent," Zulkifri said in Palmerah, South Jakarta, Jakarta Capital Special Region on Wednesday, February 13, 2019.
The Greater Jakarta LRT project is built by a consortium of five state-owned enterprises, led by state construction company PT Adhi Karya. It is aimed to ease traffic in Jabodetabek area, particularly Jakarta, Bogor, Depok and Bekasi.
According to the Transportation Ministry official, operation was initially targeted to start in 2019. However, the project was hindered by a number of challenges.
Jabodetabek comprises Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi. The area has a population of more than 28 million people.
It is the most populous urban area in Indonesia. It is also the center of government and economy of the country.
The central goverment has ordered regional leaders in Jakarta, West Java and Banten provinces to improve infrastructure systems in their respective regions. It has allocated funds to help resolve the issue.
Bogor regency, Bogor city, Depok city, Bekasi regency and Bekasi city are part of West Java province. Tangerang regency, Tangerang city and South Tangerang city are part of Banten province.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo earlier said that the government's infrastructure policy is designed to boost the country's competitiveness. He also reiterated that his infrastructure push is needed to reduce socio-economic inequality.
"Infrastructure development is not only beneficial for economic growth. It is also crucial for social justice," President Jokowi told reporters early this week.
According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesian economy grew by 5.17 percent in 2018. It was Indonesia's highest annual growth in five years.
In the meantime, Indonesia's poverty rate stood at 9.66 percent in September 2018. It decreased by 0.46 percentage point compared to September 2017.
