Jakarta: The operator of Jakarta light rail transit (LRT) has said that the light metro system is ready for commercial operation.
"We are ready for commercial operation. We are only waiting for the legal status," PT LRT Jakarta Corporate Communication Manager Melissa Suciati said here on Thursday.
The subsidiary of PT Jakarta Propertindo launched a free public trial on June 11. The company recorded more than 211 thousand passengers in the past month.
As many as five stations were open for the free public trial. The stations were North Boulevard, South Boulevard, Pulomas, Equestrian, dan Velodrome.
"Five stations are ready for commercial operation. The construction of Pegangsaan Dua Station has reached 98 percent," the PT LRT Jakarta official remarked.
In early 2019, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo warned that mismanagement of transportation system and and traffic will further worsen traffic in Greater Jakarta. However, the former Jakarta governor expressed optimism that the operation of metro systems, as well as the existing services such as TransJakarta, airport trains, and the commuter line will help ease traffic congestion in the area.
