medcom.id, Jakarta: Indonesian tobacco products industry (IHT) rejects the government's plan to ratify the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). The international convention is considered as serious threat for the industry.

"FCTC will kill clove cigarettes as it forbids additional ingredients in cigarettes," said Cigarette Production Partner Association Chairman Djoko Wahyudi, in a written statement, Jakarta, Thursday (5/26/2016).

Djoko mentioned that clove cigarettes dominate tobacco products in the country. "We hope the government is committed to protect farmers, workers and the industry," he continued.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Tobacco Farmers Association (APTI) Chairman Soeseno added that FCTC also stipulates several regulations intended to reduce cigarette sales such as plain packaging.

"FCTC threatens the welfare of two million tobacco farmers in Indonesia," he stated.

In addition, the Indonesian government has issued Government Regulation (PP) No. 109/2012 on tobacco control. They claimed that is sufficient to protect public health.
