medcom.id, Jakarta: President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said Indonesia is capable of maintaining food security in fulfilling the country's food demands. The reason is that there are still lands to be utilized for farming.

"In this country, there are lots of lands not yet utilized. An example in Merauke, there are 4.6 million hectares," Jokowi mentioned while giving a speech on the opening of the Seventh National Discussion of Traditional and Herbal Medicine Businessmen Association (GP Jamu), in the State Palace, Central Jakarta, Monday (5/25/2015).

According to Jokowi, there are 5,000 hectares already planted with rice and considered suitable. Within one hectare, he stated, the land may produce eight tons of farming products.

"If eight tons is multiplied by 4.6 million hectares, how much is the result for one harvest? Almost 35 million tons, if it's harvested twice, it may reach 70 million tons. And that's only from one regency," Jokowi elaborated.

In relation to this, he said, government decisions and support are needed. The support meant is the infrastructure developments including roads and seaports.

"Well, that is the government's duties. Tell them. It is not something too hard to be completed, but what is the goal? What is the purpose?" Jokowi added. (Eps)
