medcom.id, Jakarta: Indonesian National Shipowner Association (INSA) urged the government to accelerate the development project of the 35,000 megawatt (MW) electric power. Currently, there are many INSA members who are depending their business on the coal tug boat rentals for the steam energy power plants (PLTU).
Chairman of INSA, Johnson W Sutjipto, said there are lots of lay ups (abandoned ships) at the river or sea docks due to lack of orders. If the project is commencing smoothly, then it will regenerate the slow shipping business.
"Coal transport, we hope the 35,000 MW project to run soon, even though we know there are lots of obstacles here and there. Should the project - scattered across Indonesia - is ongoing, then it will again regenerate the shipping business, especially the rental of commodity tug boats," said Johnson in his press release in Jakarta, Monday (3/28/2016).
He added that the current problems faced by many INSA members are the slow commodity shipment, which took toll on the low productivity of members' ships. The problem then resulted on other issues: the ship lay up expenses and the continuing rental fees of leased ships.
"Surely we think that our associates (owning) Tug and Boat have parked their ships, which can also given exceptions from the banking sector. Because if it is not given, the vessels will experience something bad and it becomes rusted iron," he explained.
Meanwhile, the secretary general of INSA Lolok Sudjatmiko added that the commodity transportation sector has contributed to more than 10 percent of the total shipping businesses. Currently, there are 4,000 units of tug boats becoming members of INSA, where from that number, mostly they are assisted by the shipment of C class mining materials, such as split stones and sand.
"The coal has a large necessity. The needs of PLN (state-owned electric company) is now less than 90 million tons per year for PLTU. If the 35,000 MW is existing, or has all existed on the entire 35,000 MW, the coal (needs) may reach up to 200 million tons per year, and it may assist our associates (ship owners) on lay ups," he concluded.
