Prior to Ramadan, Price of Basic Needs Doubles

medcom.id, Tegal: Even though Ramadan is still far, but the price of basic needs in several traditional markets in Tegal, Central Java, has crawled up.

Surprisingly, the price of vegetables has doubled, as Metrotvnews.com observed in Martoloyo traditional market in Tegal. The price of shallots, which started from Rp20 thousand, has reached Rp38 thousand - as some vendors even sell it up to Rp40 thousand.

"Chili and cabbage have also doubled from their previous prices," Supendi, a forty-year-old shallot vendor in Martoloyo said on Sunday (5/24/2015).

Bajriah, 55, a vegetables vendor in Tegal's Pasar Pagi, also stated the same idea. According to the vendor, the rare supply prior to the fasting month is considered to be the main trigger of the price hike.

"It has been rising for the past three days. I don't know what caused it," Bajriah said.

Though the basic needs stocks are still secure, vendors hope that the government would take part in stabilizing the price. (Eps)
