medcom.id, Medan: PT Pelabuhan Indonesia I (Pelindo I) targets Kuala Tanjung Port to finish the first phase of construction in the end of this year so it could be operational in the first quarter of 2017.
The construction has reached 42 percent since the groundbreaking ceremony by President Joko Widodo on January 27, 2015.
The port is to be equipped with many facilities including 2.7 kilometer trestle, 500 meter dock, container yard with the capacity of 500 thousand TEUs and pool depth at 14-17mLWS.
Pelindo I President Director Bambang Eka Cahyana mentioned Kuala Tanjung Port is to be developed as indutrial gateway port that will be integrated with indutrial area.
The development of Kuala Tanjung Port is divided into four phases. The first phase is the construction of multipurpose terminal (2015-2017). The second phase is the construction of 3,000 hectare industrial area (2016-2018). The third phase is the development of dedicated terminal/hub port (2017-2019) while the last phase is the development of integrated industrial area (2021-2023).
The development of Kuala Tanjung Port which is located in Batubara regency, North Sumatra, is aligned with the government's vision to establish Indonesia as global maritime fulcrum through the Sea Toll program. "The development of Kuala Tanjung is key to improve logistics in Indonesia," said Bambang in a written statement, Thursday (3/10/2016).
The port is strategically placed in the Strait of Malacca which is the busiest sea route in the world. "This is opportunity that should be developed," he concluded.
