medcom.id, Jakarta: The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is optimistic Indonesian fishery industry can compete in ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).
"If we are talking about the readiness of the fishery sector in AEC, we are totally prepared," ensured the ministry's director general of competitiveness enhancement Nilanto Perbowo in a press release, Jakarta, Wednesday (2/24/2016).
Nilanto explained that the optimism comes from moratorium and other policies issued by the government to boost fishery production.
"In the future, fishery production could imrrove to be the largest fishery producer in Asia," he added.
According to Nilanto, several neighbouring countries such as Thailand and China are considered as the big players in the fishery sector. However, following the policies from the Indonesian government, such as the moratorium and the ban on trans-shipment, their fishery sectors have drastically declined.
"It is our momentum and opportunity, as our neighbouring countries have problems, there is empty spot in the market," he explained.
Therefore, the government since 2015 had started to allocate more fund for assistance and infrastructures.
This year, the ministry allocates Rp1.8 trillion for efforts to improve logistics such as construction of fish processing ships, live fish transporter ships, as well as the frozen fish transporter ships, with the size of around 300 GT.
"It is time for us to perform and become the winner in the AEC," he concluded.
