medcom.id, Jakarta: The government has approved to build a special economic zone in Sorong, West Papua. Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution led a meeting about the plan on Wednesday, June 29.
"We have approved to create a special economic zone in Sorong. We will prepare the regulation immediately," Darmin told reporters after the meeting.
Darmin and other officials discussed several issues in the meeting including land acquisition and infrastructure development.
"Land acquisition is important issue in Papua," said Minister of National Development Planning Sofyan Djalil.
The special economic zone in Sorong will cover 523.7 hectares of land. It will be fully completed in 2020. State Electricity Company (PLN) has agreed to provide electricity for the project.
However, Minister of Trade Thomas Lembong warned that the project must not damage tourism industry in the region. Sorong is famous with its beautiful nature and beaches.
"The project must not damage the environment," he underlined.
Meanwhile, the government is still studying proposal to establish a special economic zone in Merauke, Papua. "We are committed with special economic zone in Merauke. We only need one more meeting," Darmin concluded.
