medcom.id, Jakarta: President Joko Widodo has signaled that Indonesia wants to join Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP). The intention triggers criticism from some non-governmental organizations in Indonesia.
"President Jokowi should focus on national development agenda not the TPP," Indonesia for Global Justice (IGJ) activist, Rachmi Hertanti, at her office, Jakarta, Monday (2/15/2016).
Rachmi argued TPP could give negative impacts to national development Indonesia. First, TPP would hamper downstream industry in Indonesia. Secondly, it will limit public access to cheap medicines. Third, TPP will weaken Indonesian state-owned enterprises. Fourth, the trade agreement will hamper efforts to achieve 17 sustainable development goals.
TPP will also harm Indonesian small and medium enterprises and farmers. Lastly, it will give power to multinational corporations.
Therefore, IGJ with other NGOs reject plan to join the trade agreements. "The focus should be cooperation that could boost and support national development agenda especially the empowerment of farmers, labors and small traders," concluded Rachmi.
